Is the $45 REAL ID Airport Fee a Smart Security Move or Just a Sneaky Tax Grab?

Is the $45 REAL ID Airport Fee a Smart Security Move or Just a Sneaky Tax Grab?

From a policy design standpoint, this is actually smart nudging. If you make compliance easy AND make non-compliance mildly expensive, you achieve high adoption without banning anyone. It’s behavioral economics 101.

As someone who flew pre-9/11 and post-9/11, I’ll say this: security theater never saved a single life. But charging old folks for forgetting a card? That’s just cruel capitalism wrapped in a flag.

I’ve been using my passport at checkpoints for years. Now they want $45 per flight if I don’t get a REAL ID? Great. Just another way to make flying suck more.

People keep missing the point: REAL ID isn’t about airports. It’s about creating a national ID infrastructure. This fee is the on-ramp. Next step? Mandatory renewal, biometrics, and integration with federal databases.

Look, I get the complaints, but I just spent 20 minutes helping my mom get her birth certificate digitized. If you don’t have a REAL ID by 2026, that’s on you.

Exactly. And let’s not pretend bureaucracy hasn’t improved. My office used to take weeks. Now it’s days. Progress isn’t perfection, but it’s better than cynicism.

Oh please. ‘Progress’? You call a $45 fee progress? I flew 747s through thunderstorms, and now we’re charging grandma twenty bucks for ‘the system’? Spare me the ‘responsibility’ lecture.

Also—why not just let us use passports forever? If it was good enough for the last 20 years, why isn’t it good enough now?
