Is Manitoba Hydro Failing the North? –30°C, No Power, & Families Evacuating: A Preventable Disaster or Just Colonial Neglect?

Let's be real—the current line crosses between two islands over the Nelson River. That’s a nightmare for maintenance. You can’t just drive a truck there. Helicopter repairs are expensive and slow, but that’s the reality. Moving the line to the highway isn’t a simple fix. Terrain, environmental impact, and costs would be massive. But Hydro should’ve invested in redundancy—like backup microgrids—years ago.

Redundancy? More like basic human dignity. We install backup power in prisons and data centers, but not in Indigenous communities? Come on. This isn’t about engineering—it’s about whose lives we value. If this were a suburb of Winnipeg, the premier would be on a helicopter by now.

Spent 20 years flying into these communities. They don’t want the line on the road because it would cost millions and require relocating transmission towers. Hydro does the minimal compliance. But I get it—they don’t see the ROI. Sad, but true.

I get the outrage, but we’re all dependent on fragile infrastructure. Last winter, my block lost power for 8 hours. Was it life-threatening? Nah. We used blankets. People in Cross Lake are tough. I respect that.

I lived through six power outages like this. Each time, we lose more. Our children grow up knowing emergency evacuations, not normal winters. This is not resilience. This is trauma.

I was in Cross Lake last winter. Frostbite cases spike during outages. No heat, no running water—this is public health hell. And yes, it’s preventable.
